What To Expect from This Recipe
Y’all, Twinkies are sweet, so these Santa Twinkies are sweet.
But they are also really cute, and kind of a fun themed snack to enjoy while watching Die Hard!
They’re also an easy enough edible craft for the kids to get involved gluing on the candy eyes and red hot noses. Somewhat older kids can pipe on the beards and the trim and pom-pom on Santa’s hat, too.
If this sounds like a winner of a Christmas treat to you and you end up making it, please do me a quick favor, if you would.

What’s the Connection Between Twinkies and Die Hard?
Part of me thinks that if you don’t know, you aren’t a real fan of Die Hard.
I’m kidding!
I know we all watch lots of movies, and we may forget Key Points.
So, remember Al Powell, the cop in Die Hard played by Reginald VelJohnson? He was OBSESSED with Twinkies. They feature in Die Hard and the sequel, Die Hard 2.
Not only does Officer Powell love them, but he knows all the ingredients and declares that they have “just about everything a growing boy needs.”
And there you have it. Twinkies are a Die Hard-approved snack, and Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
How to Make Santa Twinkies
Making Santa Twinkies is literally a craft project. Here’s what you’ll need to assemble before getting started:

- Twinkies: At my store, these guys are available over near the frozen foods on the Hostess display. I’m sure you know where to find them at your store.
- red candy melts: These serve as Santa’s red coat and hat
- candy eyes: Because Santa needs to be able to see! If you’re a wiz at piping, you can pipe eyes, but gluing on candy eyes is easy, plus they are very cute
- red hots: These little cinnamon candies make great noses for Santa. You could also use pink pearl candies or any other nose-ish candies you can find
- black cookie icing: Buy this ready-made or make your own. You only need it for Santa’s “belt,” although if you are super crafty, you may think of a way to give your Santas little black boots. I am not that crafty!
- white decorator icing: Use a small star tip to give Santa’s hat fur trim and a pom pom on top, for Santa’s eyebrows and also for his beard

Red Candy Melts, Candy Eyes, Red Hots, and Black Cookie Icing
NOTE: The “rules” on the squeeze bottle of cookie icing suggest heating it in the microwave for 20 seconds. When I did that, the icing was much too thin, and then I had to let it cool down before I could use it. Start with 5 seconds and then go from there.
Procedure
- Melt the candy melts according to package directions and then use a small offset spatula to spread candy melts on the top third-to fourth of the Twinkies and then on the bottom half. Leave some Twinkie plain for the face. Use the white icing to attach a red hot for eyes.
- Use more icing to attach candy eyes.
- NOT PICTURED: Use the black icing to make a belt halfway down Santa’s jacket. Pipe white fur along the edge of Santa’s hat, a pom pom on top of the hat, eyebrows, a mustache, and a long beard.
- Let your cute Twinkie Santas set up for about 30 minutes or so and then dig in.
What to Serve with Santa Twinkies
You’ll obviously need a hot, Christmassy beverage, and that beverage should be hot butterscotch, my new favorite warm drink.
Furthermore, you should serve your beverage in a Christmas mug that speaks the truth: Die Hard is a Christmas Movie!
See?
My friend Kristina makes these mugs, and they come in Christmas green, deep red, yellow, and blue. And they all say definitively that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Plus, you have the Twinkies. So there you go!
Do check out her website to see if you’d like a mug or a set. I will be using mine all holiday season!
Then you can enjoy your Santa Twinkies while enjoying your hot beverage in a Die Hard Mug. Themed Christmas snacking level: unlocked!

- red candy melts
- American buttercream
- black decorator icing
- 16 candy eyes
- 8 red hots
Instructions
- Melt the candy melts according to package directions.
- Use an offset spatula to spread the melted candy on the bottom half and top third of each Twinkie. The bottom half will be Santa's jacket, and the top third will be his hat. Let set up until firm.
- Use a dot of decorator icing to attach the candy eyes and red hots to Santa's face.
- Use the black decorator frosting to draw a 1/4" thick line of black about halfway down Santa's "jacket" to represent his belt.
- Load your white buttercream into a piping bag fitted with a small star tip, and then pipe a big pompom on the top of Santa's hat and along the border of the hat.
- Add eyebrows over the candy eyes, a mustache, and a long beard. Let the icing set up for at least 30 minutes and then enjoy over the next couple of days. Keep any leftovers at room temperature in a tightly-sealed container for 3-4 days.
