You will love this delicious 1-2-3-4 cake recipe. Named for the amounts of the four main ingredients--butter, sugar, flour, and eggs--it's an old-fashioned yellow cake you'll make again and again.
Here are the ingredients you'll need to make your 1234 cake: 1 cup butter, 2 cups sugar, 3 cups flour, and 4 eggs are where the name comes from.
Like most American butter cakes, you'll make a 1-2-3-4 cake using the creaming method. You can use a stand mixer or a hand mixer. No need to be super fancy!
Look how rich and thick the batter is. Compared to more modern cakes, this old-fashioned version contains more eggs, and more egg = more emulsifiers for smooth batter.
Like their pound cake cousin, the layers bake up with a thin, crisp crust. You can trim this off before stacking and frosting, or you can leave it. I trim it and eat it as a snack.
