What the heck is Food 52sday anyway?
Our list for Food 52sday is decidedly light on desserts. I think of the 21 recipes we chose only about 5-6 are for dessert. This is a Mixed Blessing. It’s a good thing because it represents a balance between savory and sweet, but it’s a bad thing because folks come here to see Dessert Type Items, and often they are met with a picture of a Yum dinner. Tasty? Sure. But possibly not what folks are looking for.
So today, I am Very Pleased to present the latest Food 52sday Recipe Inspiration: Faulknerian Family Spice Cake with Caramel Icing. I love the idea of this cake because it is Southern as am I. It is Redolent with spices, and I quite like the word redolent, and it comes from a Kooky Family, according to recipe Sender Inner, ENunn. I quite like a Kooky Family. ENunn, by the way, is Emily Nunn. She’s a former food writer for both The New Yorker and The Chicago Tribune. According to my Hinternet Sleuthing, she has a book coming out next year called The Comfort Food Diaries: My Quest for the Perfect Dish to Mend a Broken Heart. She’s on twitter if you’d like to follow her.
Anyhow, I have plans for this Kooky Cake, yes I do. The bones of said cake are pretty much a Van Halen pound cake with 4 extra ounces of fat and a couple fewer ounces of liquid. Plus: caramel frosting. Add to that that the recipe is Emily’s mom’s but she had to get it from her sister (a Long Boring Story, so sayeth Emily. Which is code for Family Drama), and I am feeling some distinct Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil vibes coming off of this cake. In a good way. So, don’t expect a Standard Cake.
If you are planning on baking along, feel free to make the recipe as Emily’s Kooky family makes it. You should also feel just as free to Interpret Loosely. You know, like pancakes or something. I hope you decide to bake along; this is gonna be a fun one! As always, post your results in the comments section of the Recipe Interpretation post next Tuesday, July 31. If you don’t have a blog (and even if you do) ,please share what you made over on the fan page, too.
Thanks a lot, and have a lovely, kooky day.
