Sunday Suppers (Tuesday Edition): Holy Mole Chili made with Homemade Chile Paste and some Creative Ways to Use Up the Leftovers
Chili. If I say that to you, an Idea of what chili is to you will pop into your head. Do you see tomatoes or not? How about beans? Ground beef or diced sirloin? Mushrooms? Pork or chicken green chili? Some folks come to blows over these sorts of issues. "Real chili doesn't have tomatoes in it." "Beans?! Are you kidding me?!" "What do you mean, you serve it over spaghetti...?! I am here to tell you that it's all okay. No need for fighting. Let's all be like chili and simmer down. I hereby give ... continue reading...
Sunday Suppers (Monday Edition): Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Sandwiches
It has been quite awhile since I posted a Sunday Supper, but we actually do eat dinner (or supper) every single night. Obviously I've been holding out on you. Sorry. I try to make the Sunday Suppers posts pretty straightforward, and this one is no exception. When the days start a bit later and end a bit earlier and the nights grow chilly, soup and sandwich is always a comforting meal. And pretty easy to throw together. Make that sandwich a grilled cheese and pair it with tomato soup, and you ... continue reading...
Sunday Suppers: Mexican-Inspired Stuffed Peppers with Cilantro-Lime Rice
Have you ever made tacos or burritos--or anything, really--with grilled or sauteed chicken all shredded up in it and been disappointed that it was too dry or not soft enough or not shreddy enough and just not like the kind they use in Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants? Well, I have. I love crispy chicken, and I am a fan of Maillard Reactions, but sometimes I want my chicken Not to fight back. To shred into little fibers that are moist and soft and blend well with refried beans without poking the ... continue reading...
Sunday Suppers: Citrus-Fennel Pollen Roasted Chicken
Friends, it is a sad, sad day when I have to report that I roasted a beautiful chicken in a cast iron skillet and then didn't get to eat any of it. Not even a taste. You see, I am doing the Master Cleanse right now, and that means No Food crosses these lips. I do, however, get to drink a lot of lemonade made with Organic Grade B maple syrup, organic lemons and pure water. And cayenne pepper. I also get to do some other stuff which I'd rather not discuss right now, but which I am sure will make ... continue reading...
Yaga Stew, A Very Special Multi-Media Monday Edition of Sunday Suppers
Based on borscht, I chose to use pork ribs as the protein for Yaga Stew for whatshould be Obvious Reasons... My friend Jamie is a poet. Not the tights-wearing, feathered-cap, Courtly type. He's more Poe-ish and Carroll-esque and darksome and creepy. Last year, he and his Evil Genius friends, musician and producer Kevin Smith and artist and art teacher Ali LaRock, put their three genius heads together to produce Cornerboys, a very creepy and awesome short film based on Jamie's poem of the same ... continue reading...
Sunday Suppers: Carb-Lovers’ Cream of Chicken Soup
This is a pretty easy soup to put together, as are most soups. I started with leftover turkey stock from Thanksgiving. Yes, it had been frozen, thankyouverymuch. To that, I added one happy chicken and poached him for about an hour or so. From there on out, it was simply a matter of seasoning, thickening and fattening up the broth and adding Whatever Came to Hand. Which was all pretty starchy. You can add whatever vegetables you want. Or make it with veggie stock to keep in vegetabletarian. Leave ... continue reading...
Sunday Suppers: Alton Brown’s Corn Dogs (Among Other Things)

So, with Ken's Korny Corn Maze right around the corner from our new house, we knew that we'd eventually have to have a Ken's Korny Corn Maze Extravaganza. We did that Very Thing two weekends ago. The only rule was that every dish had to have ... continue reading...
Sunday Suppers: Quinoa and Chickpea Salad
A friend whom I hadn't seen in over twenty years came over for dinner last Thursday with his lovely wife. We weren't terribly close in college; he was a freshman when I was a senior, but one pivotal memory I have of him is this: Wait for it. In the summer of '87, I babysat someone's guitar while they went back home. I stayed in the dorms, ostensibly Painting Bathrooms, but mainly it just meant that I lived there and got paid for it. Awesome. At any rate, I figured that, since I was ... continue reading...
Church Supper Cherry Yum Yum for Throwback Thursday #tbtfood
I grew up going to church every Sunday morning for Sunday School and "big church," every Sunday evening for youth group and every Wednesday evening for Wednesday night suppers and youth choir or bell choir practice. Even back then, Wednesdays were the highlight for me. Not because of bell practice, where we would annoy our director, Jim, to the point of apoplexy (although that was fulfilling in its own way), but because of the supper. Talk about a groaning board. Foods were jumbled together on ... continue reading...
Easy Italian Sausage Pasta Sauce | Hearty, Versatile, Delicious
Why Make a Sauce with Italian Sausage? Many slow-cooked Italian pasta sauces start with ground beef or pork, and then you add seasoning to them. Italian sausage already packs a ton of bold flavor. Old Fashioned Desserts for Holiday Picnic (or Whenever)
There is probably no more American holiday than Independence Day, and I can think of no better way to round out your celebration than with old fashioned desserts. Most of these recipes feature fruit since it is in abundance in the summer, but you'll find a couple of custard type desserts as well. I hope you'll find something to love here! Pies, cobblers, crisps, slumps, and more--all might have roots in other cultures, but all also relied on seasonal availability here in the good ... continue reading...
Low-Carb Cajun Style Sausage Recipe with Cauliflower Rice
What Makes This Recipe So Delicious I have long been a fan of Cajun and Creole flavors and of andouille sausage in particular. I mean, what's not to love about garlicky, porky, spicy sausage? For this post, I honor Cajun flavors in an easy, weeknight meal sort of way. No roux here, making the dish both gluten-free (the Aidells® sausage is already gluten-free) and easy to tackle for a fast meal. The cauliflower rice is low in both calories and carbs and makes a delicious, healthy ... continue reading...
Beirut Tahini Swirls from Home Baking for Cookbooks & Calphalon
Why You Need to Make These When you think about tahini, you may not think "sweet desserts," but considering that tahini is pretty similar in flavor to peanut butter, maybe it will make more sense. Peanut butter is equally at home in savory preparations like soups and satay--or as a savory foil to sweet jelly in a sandwich--as it is in peanut butter cookies and peanut butter fudge. Here's why you need these tahini swirls in your life. Easy to make. They have a pretty minimal ... continue reading...
