Cake Decorating with Duff Goldman

Here’s Duff with my cake. After I took this picture, he made me Do More to the cake. He *made* me. I tried the whole “less is more” approach, and he Looked at me. He is not the one with whom to try that approach. So I made green scrolls all around the top between the glitter and wee green dots on the sides. The man is a Task Master.

Update: This Giveaway is Officially closed. Thanks!

So, when I went to Mixed a few weeks ago, Duff Goldman of Ace of Cakes fame was there to lead us in workshops that I shall now call “Decorating with Abandon.”  I have to say that I have not always been on Team Duff. I once saw him make a cake for a birthday that exploded. Wow, that right there my friends is an example of Grammar Gone Wrong. The cake exploded. Not the birthday. Just so we’re clear.

Anyway, it just seemed so disrespectful to the ingredients, you know? But, I guess some folks enjoy a good exploding cake.

Cake Decorating with Duff Goldman

How cute is this one? Funnest!

And it turns out  that he was rather delightful in person. I was in the first decorating session, so I think he was a bit crabby to begin with. And then he got better. He called us Freaky Blogger People. Which I quite appreciated.  And then he told us that we were there to decorate cakes. Not to take pictures of decorating cakes. To which I silently said, “Amen.” To our credit, folks didn’t  start taking pictures until about halfway through the session. Restraint.

Cake Decorating with Duff Goldman

This awesome cake got the full monty, including air brushing and shimmery stuff. Love it!

And then he said what I’ve been saying for a long time. But people listen to him, because he’s on television.

A Quasi-Quote from Duff:

It’s not rocket science, people. We’re just decorating cakes. Kids are *really* good at this, so just relax.  Just look at your cake and see it finished. And then go for it. We have all this cool stuff, so just start ripping things open.

So, go Duff.

Cake Decorating with Duff Goldman

So many different designs, all made with the same basic materials.

Anyway, we certainly did rip into stuff and got to play with everything from a keen airbrush system to fondant to crazy wires that stick out of cakes to glitter.  And everyone’s cake was unique. Which was awesome.

Duff Goldman Decorating Stuff

Sorry there’s no picture of the Cake Graffiti. I just remembered that I had it. :)

And we all left with a Ton of Duff Stuff. But I’m not huge into decorating with fondant, and I know that one of you guys will get more use out of it than me, so I’m giving it away!

The winner will receive:

  • 6 small tubs of fondant in Bright and Awesome colors
  • 1 pack of cake tattoos
  • 1 pack of cake markers (for writing or drawing on white fondant or on royal icing)
  • 4 packs of decorating frosting (no decorating tips, though, just to be clear)
  • a can of Cake Graffiti, which is spray paint, but for cakes!
  • Maybe another surprise or two

To enter, please leave a comment here telling me what you’ll be decorating with your new goodies. Make sure that there is a valid email associated with your name, because this will be the only way I have of contacting you if you win.

Since the fondant and icing are so heavy, I must limit this giveaway to folks in the Continental US only. Otherwise, the shipping will be A Bit Much.

This giveaway will run now through Sunday, December 23, 2012 at 5pm.  I’ll send out a Congratulatory Email shortly thereafter, so if you really want to win, please keep an eye on your email.  Since it is a holiday week and there will be people traveling, you’ll have 72 hours to respond or I’ll choose another winner.  It’ll make me sad, but I’ll do it.

Good luck, friends!

Cake Decorating with Duff Goldman

PS None of the Mixed Attendees made cakes that exploded.

I belong to a Bonsai club in Placerville, CA and I provide the refreshments for the meetings. In August we have our annual summer potluck and in December we have our annual a winter potluck. I usually make a decorated cake. Last summer I did a Bonsai cake. Since I didn’t have any fondant, I had to use buttercream. It was 91degrees. Needless to say, it melted into a big messy puddle. This year, I would love to use fondant to make an awesome Bonsai cake. Winning this package would mean making the best cake ever. Thank you for sharing.

He baked, hand decorated with a piping bag and sold a two-layer vanilla/almond cake with cream cheese frosting dyed lavender with white star tip flower borders two weeks ago to a coworker for her wedding night. We would use the Duff Stuff to fully launch our homemade baked goods business early next year!!!!!

My Mom’s 80th birthday is in January – and while an exploding cake might be – uh – exciting – and hip-n-coolio decorated one would be even better. Joe is likely going away to school in mid-Jan – so there will NEED to be an awesome cake made for his see-ya-later party.
